Fragrance notes
Perfume has three sets of notes. These notes unfold over time, with the first impression of the top notes, then leading to the heart notes (middle notes), and then the base notes which is not perceived until 30 minutes after application. Evaporation process of the perfume is important while creating these notes.
- Top notes are the scents that perceived immediately on application. Top notes evaporate quickly as they consist of small, light molecules.
- Middle notes (heart notes) are the scent that is followed by the top notes and they mask the base notes.
- Base notes are scent of a perfume that emerges after the middle notes. Base notes makes the main theme of a perfume together with the heart notes. Base notes are made of rich , deep compounds. It emerges after 30 minutes or so.
Perfumes have been existing for a thousands of years, backing all the way to some of the earliest human civilizations.
Perfumery began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt followed by Romans, Greeks and Persians.
The word perfume comes from the Latin phrase, "per fumus", meaning through smoke. The art of perfumery started in Western Europe 1221 and prospered in Renaissance Italy.
Traditional Perfumes
They come in six categories. Floral, ambered (oriental), wood, leather, chypre (cyprus) and fern.
Floral: Single floral fragrance is dominated by one particular flower. Floral Bouquet is a combination of several flowers.
Ambered (Oriental): Featuring sweet scents of ambergris or labdanum, sometimes combined with vanilla, flowers, woods and tonka bean.
Wood: These fragrances are dominated with wood scents. Mostly cedarwood, agarwood and sandalwood. Patchouli is also found in these perfumes.
Leather:These fragrances feature the scents of tobacco, wood, wood tars and honey.
Chypre (Cyprus): They are scents like bergamot, patchouli, labdnum and oakmoss.
Fougere (fern): These fragrances have the base scent of lavender, oakmoss and coumarin.
Modern Perfumes
Fruity: Consist of aromas of fruits.
Citrus: Mainly used in freshening eau de colognes.
Gourmand: These are scents with "edible" or "dessert like" qualities. they also have components like vanilla, tonka bean, wood flavors and coumarin.
Aquatic, Oceanic: This new category in perfume history first
appeared with Christian Dior's Dune in 1991. Contains calone, a synthetic scent discovered in 1966.
Green: This scent is like cut grass, crushed green leaf and cucumber.
