I ended up with TWO 'cat-trees' for my little Mario... He was a devilish little guy! You're right, there's nothing you can do to discourage a cat's natural behaviour, (even if the cat DOES know its master doesn't approve of it, and they do...) so providing an acceptable alternative to the furniture has the extra benefit of removing the cat's need not to get caught when their scratching-instincts force them to tear up your sofa.
Mario almost never actually nestled into the two little 'cat-houses' we had for him, but he sure scratched the hell out the posts!
